Vectorial Elevation by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Vectorial Elevation by: Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was an interactive light sculpture consisting of 18 searchlights positioned over Mexico City's Zocalo Square. Anyone with access to the internet could program a light sculpture design and jump on a queue for it to be played during the two-week duration of the project.

The lights were controlled by a 3D online simulation that was visualized by digital cameras. The beams could be seen as far as a 15 km radius and 800,000 people participated from 89 different countries. The website had no censoring, so messages could be anything from football scores to marriage proposals.
