Brandon is a 1998 digital web project created by Shu Lea Cheang. The artwork looks at the participatory culture of the Internet while drawing attention to the assult and murder of Brandon Teena, a young trans man. The piece utilizes hyperlinked images of human sexuality and gender. Based in interactive code (html, Java, Javascript and server database), Brandon is an example of "cyberfeminism" as the piece uses technology as a means to break down social assumptions about gender. Cheang's work focuses on LGBT rights, environmentalism, and cybernetics. |
