Global Interior Project

by Masaki Fujihata

The Global Interior Project by Masaki Fujihata is a remarkably prescient work centered around occupation of virtual spaces and arguably, virtual reality. Three interfaces are gathered in the installation that have a user interface that we're accustomed to seeing in arcades in the current day and age. A screen with a control pad just below. Utilizing this UI, those engaging with the installation and explore and interact with one another in a virtual space entirely akin to what we now see frequently in online gaming. The video above is perhaps a bit dated, but it's a stirring example of just how groundbreaking this idea was. It seems to take quite a bit of explaining for those in attendance to actually wrap their mind around controlling a virtual avatar in a 3d space.
