Who are the Hmong?

The Hmong are an Asian ethnic group indigenous to East and Southeast Asia. They are a diasporic and stateless people originating historically from Southwestern China.

Due to a long history of being persecuted, the Hmong have always been migrants. First, some of them fled from Southwestern China in the 1800s due to the growing populations of ethnic Han-Chinese. Then, at the end of the Secret War in Laos, coinciding with the end of the Vietnam War, the Hmong fled again after facing persecution for helping the Americans against the local communists.

After escaping Laos and finding refuge in the neighboring country of Thailand, many Hmong refugees were relocated to different countries such as the U.S, France, South America, and Australia.

In the U.S, Hmong refugees were mostly resettled in states in the midwest and the west. In fact, the Twin Cities in Minnesota is home to one of the largest populations of Hmong.
