Vocab List
D&D has a lot of jargon. There are even multiple ways of shortening Dungeons and Dragons (D&D or dnd/DnD). Even long-term players get terms confused or even learn new slang along the way.
Here are frequently used words in D&D sessions:
Dungeon Master (DM) - organize and run the game, tell the story; sometimes called a Game Master (GM)
Crit - typically refers to a "critcal hit" or a d20 roll that lands on 20; might also refree to a "critcal miss" or a d20 roll that lands on 1
Nat 20 - a d20 roll that lands on 20, without any modifers added; this is the best roll in the game
Tanks - characters who can take or deal heavy damge
Metagaming - a negative player trait; an in-game character unfairly using information gathered outside of the game world
Saving Throw – a die roll to determine if a player resists and effect.
Hit Points (HP) – the amount of health a character has; when HP drops to O the character is unconscious
Armor Class (AC) - the number that determines when your character is able to be hit
Fifth-Edition (5E/5e) - the current edition of D&D avaliable; released in 2014
PHB, DMG, MM – The offical books (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual)
Buff – power or ritual that grants a benefit to oneself and/or allies
Cleric – a relgious or spiritual healer
Paladin – a holy knight crusading in the name of a good or order
Wizard - a magic-user who learns and studies magic
Warlock - a magic-user who has magic from a pact
Sorcerer - a magic-user who is born with magic
